It Takes a Village: 20 Years of Cleft Surgery

Posted on

You have probably heard the old saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” At LWB, we have tweaked that saying slightly to reflect that “it takes a village to heal a child.”

Little boy after cleft surgery

Our latest cleft surgery trip to Guatemala was a true collaboration of dedicated individuals, intent upon improving the lives of children born with cleft lip and cleft palate. Medical professionals, in-country staff, LWB staff, and volunteers from around the world came together at Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro to perform over 50 life-changing surgeries.

Why Is Cleft Surgery So Important?

Hear from the surgeons who perform these cleft surgeries, and see behind the scenes at the hospital in this short video with footage from our recent cleft mission trip to Antigua.

A pro bono team of medical personnel was led by University of California Davis alums and fellows Dr. Travis Tollefson, Dr. Chris Tolan, Dr. Jennifer Shehan, and Dr. John Ness.
