Coats For Kids 2008-2009

During our coat drive in 2008, hundreds of coats were bought and shipped thanks to the generosity of over a hundred LWB donors. There are some of the coat modeled by Children in many areas of China. This program is very popular because with a very small one-time donation of $12 comes the knowledge that a child will have a warmer winter…not to mention being brightly and fashionably dressed! Many of the coats were given to children in our foster care and education programs.

Success Stories

Jia Wen (Claudia)

Jia Wen (Claudia) June 2009 (20 months)

Don’t we all just love a success story? I know I certainly do. That’s what keeps our LWB sponsors, volunteers and me working so hard. It’s such a reward when we hear a success story like the one of Jia Wen in the Dingyuan orphanage.

Jia Wen’s Nannies tell us that she has the sweetest smile that melts their hearts, has the happiest personality that lifts their spirits and is happy to meet new people. Her Nannies report that Jia Wen is particularly happy after her bottle of formula.

At one years old, Jia Wen weighed in at 22lbs and was over 29 inches long. That puts her on the 95th percentile for weight and 75th percentile for height on the Chinese charts – that’s some good growing! Jia Wen is putting those pounds and length to good use – one of her “hobbies” is to stand on her crib and rock it for fun!

Jia Wen recently acquired another beautiful name, Claudia. Jia Wen was united with her forever family and they are so happy to have this little girl in their lives. The Dingyuan staff wish the very best for this little girl they call an “angel of joys”.

Allison

Allison's Success Story

Sometimes I have to remind myself to get back to the basics. What are the basics we as human beings require? Food, shelter, clothing, love. It’s said that once you have the basics covered, that happiness can be found. When I think about the basics, I remember how blessed I am that I can provide the basics for my children so easily. That’s not true for many children in the world. That’s not true for the little children in the orphanages in China. Sometimes it’s hard for the orphanage directors and nannies to provide the basics. They often have so little and have so many to try and help. That’s where the LWB Nutrition program finds it can help. We aid those taking care of China’s orphans to have the basics – contentment from a full tummy, nutrition that will help them grow healthy and strong, knowledge that another meal is coming.

In Jinjiang, there is a little girl, Allison. She came to the orphanage at 6months old and was very tiny. The nannies soon found out why she was so small – little Allison had terrible diarrhea every day. The orphanage took her to the hospital several times, but no cause for the diarrhea could be found. The Orphanage Director then came to LWB and asked if we could help. Was there any formula available for babies with diarrhea? LWB sent 22 cans of Isomil formula for Allison. The nannies steadfastly provided the Isomil to little Allison and after two weeks they saw a slight improvement. They confidently kept providing the Isomil formula and Allison gained weight! They asked LWB for additional Isomil and Allison is doing great now. She weighed 17.2 lbs in December, 2008 and measured 26.4 inches. By March, 2009, she weighed 19 lbs and measured 28.7 inches. In June, Allison’s stats were up to 20.1 lbs and 29.1 inches.

Now Allison is giving the staff a run for their money. The nannies report that her appetite has improved - she likes her formula as well as fruit, cookies and pork soup. Allison is also very active and always on the move – in fact, the last two visits, our Nutrition coordinator has had a hard time getting her to sit long enough to snap a picture! Best news of all – Allison has been matched to a family. She will meet her forever family at the end of July, 2007 and Allison’s forever family will meet an energetic, on the go girl who’s basic needs have been met and now she’s ready for much love and happiness!!!

Thank you to all our Nutrition sponsors who made a difference in the life of this one child and many other little ones like her!!!
